What's the Best Title?

It's not uncommon for Florida to be different from the rest of the country. In fact, Florida is one of the many places where things are very different - from culture to climate and education to architecture. Even in the case of unlicensed architects' title, Florida stands alone as "applicants."

Recently AIA released an article by Katie Harms, AIA ("What do you want to be called in 2010?") that is surveying AIA architects and associates about the issue of "intern titling." For those that have achieved licensure or those in the process know it takes hard work to acheive the title "architect" and those that are in AIA have a title of Associate, but how does the state refer to you?

Tell us your thoughts.

Sunshine State Modular Classroom Design Competition

The Florida Foundation for Architecture is embarking on a program to address the issue of school growth through the creation of a series of modular "Florida Classrooms."

The Foundation is sponsoring a design competition for AIA Florida Emerging Professionals. Emerging professionals are defined as architecture students in the Florida University system, AIA Associate members, and architects licensed less than 10 years.

The Competition is aimed at fostering research associated with the design of modular classroom units that can serve K through 12 student populations throughout the state of Florida. Solutions are being sought to address the design parameters of affordability, sustainability and structural durability within the Florida context. The design shall also address the “rapid deployment” element by providing a “modular” design solution which can be pre-manufactured and delivered to a school site.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year Florida AIA Emerging Professionals... this year will bring many challenges and opportunities for us all. With the current economy, the networking benefits of being an AIA member will be put to good use. Remember your chapter is a resource for you to make professional connections in your community. I would also encourage anyone either looking for work and in need of an employee to check out the new job posting section of the Florida AIA website.

Remember to get involed in your chapter and your local universities as well...

I look foward to you comments, suggestions, and the postings from your Chapter EP Directors this year...
